    1. To choose your color (yellow, forest, or white), please choose "Include a message to Atlas & Oracle" while adding the item to your cart.

about

Now this is a track I've been looking forward to releasing for a long time.

Little background info: this is actually my second time going through an album release cycle. I did the same thing in 2021, except I didn't have real instruments on the tracks. At the time I took it very seriously. Now I look at it as a dry run.

So I had just released my first single, and had this one in the bank to release next. But I had a big concern: I didn't want to come across as pretentious.

"You don't need to try? Well that must be nice for you..."

That's what I imagined people thinking, at least. So I quickly wrote a song that could take its place (Little River) and uploaded it later that very week.

But that's not the message of the song- not really. The story I told in the song is true, at least in part- Bukowski's grave really does say "Don't try." That really is where I got the advice.

But what does he mean by that? Well, he was specifically talking about how he views his own writing. When he tried his hardest, his work suffered. When he waited for the work to spring out of him, he wrote his best work.

There's a lot to be said about this strategy. Some artists take great pains to labor over their creative process, and some of those artists create tremendous work, it's true. And all work requires a certain amount of discipline to see through to the end, and the practice that a disciplined approach entails leads to increased mastery.

But my favorite songs of mine, by and large, are the ones that came to me as I was thinking about something completely different. When I wasn't forcing it, or in other words- when I wasn't trying.

This extends past creative endeavors as well. When I feel most comfortable with myself is when I'm thinking about myself the least. When I enter a flow state, I feel capable of great things. When I stop and think about it, the doubt creeps in. It can be overwhelming.

The truth is, you know who you are, deep inside. You always have. Once you start stripping away the layers of bullshit that the world forces you to develop, you start to remember the person you've always been.

So stop trying. Just be. Then just do.

lyrics

I don't need to try
I just need to find
To find where I started
I don't need to try
(I don't need to try)
I just need to
I just need to fly
Ba-dah-dah-dah-dah
I just need to fly
Ba-dah-dah-dah-dah

Wasting time
In the afternoon
Searching for a piece of advice
I thought that'd be nice
And who should it turn out to be
But noted asshole Bukowski
Whose words would come and echo through the years
On his grave it said don't try
And that is just what I needed to hear
Oh darling let me be clear
Oh honey

I don't need to try
I just need to find
To find where I started
I don't need to try
I just need to
I just need to fly
Ba-dah-dah-dah-dah
I just need to fly
Ba-dah-dah-dah-dah

"Somebody once asked me, what do you do?
How do you, create?
You don't, I told them
You don't try
That's very important, not to try"

Wasting time every day
Waiting for that perfect moment to come my way
If I want to find what I'm looking for
I guess I'll have to look inside
I guess I'll have to look inside
I guess I'll have to look inside

(I don't need to try)
I just need to fly
Ba-dah-dah-dah-dah
I just need to fly
Ba-dah-dah-dah-dah

"We work too hard, we try too hard
Don't try, don't work
It's there
It's been looking right out at us, aching to kick out"
