This song was released as a demo with MIDI instruments on April 20, 2021. This was one of the first songs I wrote as the pandemic raged, before vaccines were available but when it was already obvious that a whole lot of people weren't going to take it seriously.
The following are the liner notes from that release:
"One more for the books! This release is coming off my busiest couple months ever at work, where I've been almost unable to work on music. Thankfully I had this one in my back pocket. This was actually the first song I recorded start to finish for Jubilee, and I felt at the time that it was the best song I'd ever written. I've since surpassed that feeling, so keep an eye out for song #4 😉
This song is meant to sum up how I've been feeling this past year (at the time of writing, 'these past 4 months'). People are dying every day. It continues to happen. It's not easy to remember- but it's harder to forget.
What's so scary about this virus is that so many people will be totally unaffected. So many people will come away from this unharmed, some having had the virus and never even knowing it, some having had mild symptoms only to come away thinking that it's not that big a deal. But others' lives will be changed forever.
It pains me to think aboutt. It hurts to talk about. Writing this song helped me feel a bit better. Listening to it may hurt. It is my greatest hope that we can look back on this song in ten years' time and marvel at how well we banded together to make change happen after all this is over. I choose not to consider the alternative.
I called this song Be Natural, even though I never mentioned that phrase in the song. I believe that the most natural thing in the world is compassion. Some of my earliest memories involve seeing a friend crying, and trying to help them feel better. That was before the world changed me. I believe that I can be that person again. I believe that we can all be that person.
I hope this helps. I hope you can find some comfort in knowing that someone else feels the same way as you. I hope we can use that feeling to change the world.
